Harbor Blvd, Santa Ana, Dana Point, surfing, etc

Today's image is a postcard for Santana Mobile Homes, at 1311 N. Harbor Boulevard, in Santa Ana, in the 1950s or early 1960s. Note that they come in colors ranging from raspberry to lime green.

Harbor Blvd is another street with a significant number of name changes. In Fullerton alone, it was known variously at Spadra, Fullerton Rd, and Palm Dr. It was also known as Palm in Anaheim. To further confuse matters, the northern portion of today’s Harbor Blvd was once also part of Highway 101.

The Dana Point Historical Society will hold a meeting March 26, 7pm, at the Surfing Heritage Museum in San Clemente. The meeting will begin with a guided tour of the museum.

  1. In the 1940-1960s Fullerton's Harbor Blvd was Hwy 101. It came east from downtown LA as Whittier Blvd then made the "Big Curve" in La Habra south thru Fullerton Anaheim Orange etc. Pacific Coast Hwy was 101A (Alt) thru the county to where it met Hwy 101 south of Dana Point at the Santa Fe RR bridge. In the 1960s Harbor Blvd was changed to State Hwy 72.
    Orangethrope Ave in Fullerton in the 1950s was State Route 14 til it reached Santa Ana Canyon Road where it became State Route 18 to Riverside. Lincoln Ave in Anaheim crossed the county as State Route 18 to Santa Ana Cyn Rd where it continued east.
    Brea Blvd in Fullerton and Brea was State Route 57 to Pomona in the 1940s to the 1960s. Garden Grove Blvd was State Route 22 during the same time. Beach Blvd has always been State Route 39.
    The only two routes in the county to retain there numbering was State Route 57 and 22 when they went to nearby Freeways. The 91 Fwy was first named, on the drawing board as the "Houston" Freeway as it ran next to Houston street on the north in Fullerton and in Anaheim. In the late 1950s to early 1960s the state mixed up and reassigned the "Route" numbers to "State Highways" to match with the adoption of the US Interstate Defense Hwy system
