J.A. Prescott Ranch citrus
It's already late, so I'm keeping tonight's post brief. I was over at Jim Sleeper's place today, and I thought this citrus box end in his garage was interesting. This is obviously a stock label, and the artwork is better known for its use on "Juiciful" labels from Redlands. Anyway, Jim says the Prescott Ranch had sort of a one-person packing operation, so this is a somewhat uncommon label.

Sadly, I had to shut down comments (my favorite part of the blog) thanks to endless spam. Most of my posts are linked from my FB page, so feel free to comment there or to email me. If I can find a more secure way to do so, I will bring back normal commenting later.

Any knowledge as to whether Jim Sleeper's books will ever be republished? Or better yet, a cheaper source for them? I'm a poor school teacher who is reluctant about shelling out $75 for one of his books, much as I think they may be worth that...
ReplyDeleteI'm trying to get a local historical organization to underwrite the publication of one of Jim's unpublished works. But I don't think there's been any talk about republishing earlier works.
ReplyDeleteFrankly, if "Turn The Rascals Out" were republished in the same format today, it would probably cost you $75 anyway. Printing and binding ain't cheap.
I was hoping Jim would have a big stack of his books tucked away in his garage (at original prices), but no such luck. Unlike many other authors, his inventory seems to move pretty briskly. Guess I'll be buying "A Boy's Book of Bear Stories" at standard resale prices.
If you know of a publisher (other than Arcadia) who's willing to take on the long-neglected field of Orange County history, please let me know. Many of us could benefit from that.
How about Sunbelt Publications? They published "Orange County Place Names A-Z" by Phil Brigandi. See sunbeltbook.com.
ReplyDeleteYes, and bless Sunbelt for publishing what has turned out to be among my most-used references. (It saves me from calling and bothering Phil at home at least a few times each week.)
ReplyDeleteI think, however, that they did the O.C. place names book based on the popularity of their earlier San Diego County place names book. They haven't exactly been out beating the bushes for other O.C. titles. But perhaps they should be approached about that.
Two of Jim's books are available through the Santa Ana Historical Preservation Society. Orange County Almanac is available for #13.00 and Great Movies Shot in Orange County costs $25.00. (And shipping added - no extra tax). Email me at sahps@sahps.org for more details. You can pay with paypal if you'd like.
ReplyDeleteFYI - That's the 3rd of Jim's O.C. Almanacs for sale at SAHPS. They're all good, but 3 is probably my favorite.
